November Faculty Voices. From Reader to Writer: How Wikipedia Editing Transforms the Classroom
Wednesday, November 19, 2025 12:00–1:00 PM
- DescriptionLearn from a panel of faculty members who have used Wikipedia Edu in their courses (Alicia Rueda--MODL; Christy Spivey--ECON ; and Laurel Stvan--LING). The classroom is a space for both consuming knowledge and creating it. What if your students could do both, while also learning valuable digital literacy and research skills? This session explores how integrating Wikipedia editing assignments into your courses can transform students from passive readers into active knowledge creators. We'll cover the practical steps of developing a successful Wikipedia assignment, from structuring a project to finding the right articles. We'll also discuss the impact of these projects on student learning, including how they teach critical thinking, collaboration, and the importance of public scholarship. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to implement a Wikipedia assignment and an appreciation for the effect it can have on their students' academic and digital growth.
