No. 3 Seed UTA Takes Down No. 6 Utah Tech In Quarterfinal Match Of WAC Tournament
ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 3 UT Arlington women's tennis team (8-9) secured a quarterfinal sweep over No. 6 Utah Tech 4-0 in their opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.
The Mavericks got the momentum rolling in doubles play as they locked down the early clinch to go up 1-0 into singles play.
The duo of Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Mialy Ranaivo had a dominant showing on Court 1 as they allowed the Trailblazers only one game. The pair finished first as they defeated Maya Inouye and Mariana Zurita 6-1.
The clinch came on Court 3, where Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and Nika Novikova earned a strong victory over Laura Coulome and Nutsa Tsintsadze. The Trailblazers scored three games but could not overpower Araoz-Gosn and Novikova as they concluded doubles play with a 6-3 win.
Singles play followed in a similar manner, with the Mavs taking care of business despite a push from the Trailblazers on the higher courts.
Both Nika Novikova and and Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn added to their strong doubles showing, making quick work on Court 5 and Court 6. Novikova took down Maya Inouye 6-1, 6-3 on Court 5 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Mavs while Araoz-Gosn defeated Laura Coulome 6-2, 6-2 on Court 6 to put UTA up 3-0.
Ioana Dumitrescu clinched the match for the Mavs on Court 4 where she defeated Nutsa Tsintsadze 6-4, 6-3.
UTA moves on the semifinals on Friday, April 18, where they will face No. 2 Tarleton State. Play is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT. UTA split with the Texans this season, defeating them at home while falling on the road.
