Mavs Suffer Heartbreaking Defeat To No. 3 Abilene Christian In WAC Semifinals
ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 2 seeded UT Arlington men's tennis team (10-10) suffered a heartbreaking end to the season with a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Abilene Christian (12-10) in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament on Friday at the Arlington Tennis Center.
With the victory, Abilene Christian advances to face No. 1 Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the championship.
The Mavericks took the doubles point behind strong showings on the top two courts. The duo of Meethre Barot and Pedro Sasso defeated Merse Deli and Daniel Morozov 6-3 on Court 1. The Mavs clinched the doubles point behind Federico Garbero and Daniel Pérez-Caraballo who defeated Ethan Scribner and Alejandro Verdasco 6-4 on Court 2 to enter singles play up 1-0 on the Wildcats.
The Mavs would stumble in singles action despite strong starts.
Mattia Ricci fell to Merse Deli in straight sets on Court 3, dropping the match 6-4, 6-4 to knot the score up at one apiece.
Andres Medus put the Mavs back up by one after a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dennis Dutine on Court 2.
The Wildcats would tie the score back up at two apiece after a Daniel Morozov victory over Meethre Barot on Court 1 in three sets. Barot took the first set 7-5 then dropped the next two 6-2, 6-4.
Federico Garbero dropped a tough three set match on Court 6 to Benjamin McDonald 2-6, 6-1, 6-7 which put the Wildcats up 3-2.
The clinch happened on Court 4 where Pedro Sasso dropped a heartbreaker to Tomas Tischner 3-6, 6-4, 3-6.
The Mavs were looking for the three-peat as WAC Tournament champions but fell short.
