Mavs Close Out Regular Season On High Note By Defeating Abilene Christian At Home
ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team (10-9) wrapped up the regular season in grand fashion by defeating Abilene Christian (11-9) 4-3 on Thursday evening at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks celebrated Senior Day by honoring Daniel Pérez-Caraballo and Pedro Sasso with a small ceremony prior to the match where they were presented with special UTA tennis racquets along with other gifts while pictures were taken.
With the win, the Mavs move one match above five hundred and are 3-2 in their last five matches while currently riding a two-match win streak as we head into the conference tournament.
The Mavs would go up 3-0 early on the Wildcats before ACU scrapped a point to make it 3-1. UTA would clinch the match 4-1 thanks to a victory on Court 3 but the remaining two matches would be played out. UTA dropped the final two matches in close tiebreakers.
UTA picked up the doubles point behind thanks to solid victories on Courts 2 and 3. The team of Andres Medus and Mattia Ricci solidly defeated the tandem of Martin Delnido and Alejandro Verdasco 6-0 on Court 3 followed by the duo of Federico Garbero and Daniel Pérez-Caraballo defeating Benjamin McDonald and Ethan Scribner 6-3 on Court 2 to secure the doubles point for the Mavs.
Andres Medus kicked off singles play by picking up a strong 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 2 over Merse Deli to put the Mavs up 2-0. On Court 1, Meethre Barot defeated Daniel Morozov 7-6, 6-4 to move it 3-0 in favor of the Mavs.
The remaining four matches all went into the decisive third set.
Daniel Pérez-Caraballo dropped a tough match on Court 6 to Benjamin McDonald 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, giving ACU their first point of the contest to make it 3-1 in favor of the Mavs.
On Court 3, Mattia Ricci picked up an exciting 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Dennis Dutine to clinch the match for the Mavs.
Court 4 was next to wrap up which saw Pedro Sasso falter in a close match against Tomas Tischner 6-7, 6-3, 6-7. Yazid Lahjomri dropped a tough 7-6, 4-6, 5-7 match to Martin Delnido on Court 5.
UTA now turns their sights to the 2025 Western Athletic Conference Championships that take place from Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19. The Mavs won't have to travel far for the tournament as they are the host of this year's conference championships, the second time in the past three seasons the Mavs have been able to host. UTA will be looking for their third straight WAC Tournament Championship.
