Mavs Dominate Texans To Open WAC Tournament
MESA, Ariz. --Junior Xavier Melendez racked up four hits to help lead the UT Arlington Mavericks over the Tarleton State Texans 10-1 on Tuesday to advance to the double elimination portion of the bracket.
Sophomore Caylon Dygert (7-4) got the win for UT Arlington (20-31). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing five walks and striking out six. Senior Caden Noah also pitched well, going 2.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out three.
In addition to his four hits, Melendez had a double and an RBI to lead the Mavericks. Junior Larry Haskins put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Senior Tate Bethel also chipped in for UT Arlington, putting together two hits in six trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. UT Arlington's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Bethel.
The Mavericks then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Texans cut it to 4-1. UT Arlington scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Melendez, which brought the Mavericks lead to 5-1.
UT Arlington kept Tarleton State without a run before building their lead to 7-1 in the seventh inning. The Mavericks added two to their tally on Haskins' two-run homer to left.
UT Arlington held the Texans scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The three-run fram for the Mavericks was puncuated by a two-RBI double from Haskins. bringing the score to 10-1 in favor of UT Arlington. The score remained 10-1 for the rest of the game, as the Mavericks coasted to the win.
