Mavs Take On Tarleton State In Opening Round Of WAC Tournament

MESA, Arizona - The seventh-seeded UT Arlington baseball team (19-31, 11-13 WAC) will face the sixth-seed Tarleton State Texans (24-31, 12-12 WAC) in the opening round of the WAC tournament.
 
The Mavs hold an all-time record of 32-5 over the Texans and will be the first time the two teams play each other in the WAC tournament.
 
 
GAME NOTES

  • According to D1Baseball.com, the Mavs ended the regular season with the toughest schedule within the Western Athletic Conference with the 21st hardest non-conference schedule in the country.
  • Within conference play, no team cracks the top three in both offensive and pitching categories—except the Mavs. They currently sit second in batting average, offensive production, and team ERA.
  • The Mavs have 52 homeruns on the season, which is currently fifth most in program history. It is only the fifth time in program history a Maverick squad had over 50 homeruns.
  • Tyce Armstrong, a native of Conroe, Texas, leads the Mavs in homeruns (11), RBI (41), and total bases (103). 
  • In the regular season series against Tarleton, the Mavericks blasted nine homeruns over the weekend. The nine homeruns are the most in a series since the Mavs jacked nine in a two-game series against Houston in 2023. 
  • Offensively, the Mavs rank second in the WAC in batting average with a mark of .310, additionally, the Mavs rank third in homeruns with 36, and trail Utah Valley and Tarleton by only two. The Mavs also have the second most hits (274), Total Bases (431) and doubles (45).
  • In conference play, the Mavs pitching staff ranks second in the WAC with an ERA of 5.37, allowing just 127 earned runs over a span of 24 conference games. The Mavs have also only allowed only 58 walks in conference play, with the next closest team having 84 (Grand Canyon). The Mavs pitching staff also lead the WAC in runners picked off with five on the season and have allowed the fewest homeruns in the conference with 18 on the season.
  • Caylon Dygert, a sophomore from Magnolia, Texas, was named the opening day starter and racked up three strikeouts and no runs allowed in 8.1 innings pitched. Last season, he made 14 starts as a pitcher, and appeared in 25 games as a DH/1B last season with the Mavs. He picked up 48 strikeouts and allowed just 16 walks while leading the team with a 3.79 ERA. The sophomore allowed just 38 earned runs across 90.1 innings pitched and picked up his first complete game in just his third-career start at Lamar (3/2/24) ... Offensively, Dygert slashed 11 hits in 33 at-bats with two doubles and slashed for 5 RBIs and a home run while holding an OPS of .921. He was named Second Team Freshman All-American by D1Baseball.com and won a conference player of the week award...This season, Dygert has continued his two-way career slashing .400 across 35 at bats, a homerun, 14 RBI and 3 doubles to go along with an OPS of 1.084. On the mound, Dygert held an ERA of 4.25 across 78.1 innings pitched. The sophomore had career highs in strikeouts (55) and walks allowed (10) and sits 5th in the NCAA in walks allowed per nine innings with a mark of 1.15.
