Cross Country Opens 2025 Season With Very Own Gerald Richey Invitational
ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington cross country teams will open the 2025 campaign on Friday, September 5 with their very own Gerald Richey Invitational at Harold Patterson Sports Complex.
The collegiate women's 5k is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. with the men's 5k immediately following.
The Mavericks will be joined by Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, TCU, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, Dallas Baptist, Baylor, Hill College and Ranger Junior College.
UTA's home meet is named in honor of longtime former UTA assistant track and field coach Gerald Richey who passed away in 2019. Richey is an Arlington icon, spending 26 years (1969-95) at Arlington High School before coming over to UTA where he worked for 18 years (1995-2013). Last season, the men finished second while the women tabbed third.
"We're looking forward to getting going and facing good competition on Friday," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "They've put in a lot of summer training. Our goal is to get better and that starts with having a strong season opener."
UTA welcomes back four returners from a season ago on the men's side including Rogelio Aguirre, Daniel Armstrong, Brian Guevara and Alex Kalmar along with transfers Toby Eaton, Leo LeGrand and Hudson Irvine. Freshmen Mateo Doherty, Kebede Kerlin, Angel Sanchez, Jameson Stewart and Collin Woodside all look to make their UTA debut.
The women enter the 2025 season ranked 15th in the NCAA South Central Regional preseason poll, returning seven athletes from last season including Lauren Baur, Matro Jepkemboi, Justina Lusby, Emilia Mandl, Krianne McBride, Abigail Perez and Lauren Walls-Portillo. Sauerhage strengthened the new roster with transfer Kayan Green along with three freshmen, Dorcas Jepkosgei, Macaiah Franklin and Linn Adolfsson.
