UTA Athletics announced the resignation of head baseball coach Clay Van Hook on Friday after leading the program for two seasons.
The University of Houston hired Van Hook as its recruiting coordinator and will move him to the top assistant coach position, replacing Ross Kivett.
Van Hook joined UTA in 2022 as the program's seventh head coach, according to previous Shorthorn reporting. In his tenure, Van Hook led the baseball team to 51 wins, the highest two-season victory total since the 2018-2019 seasons, which totaled 54.
Last season, Van Hook led the baseball team to a sixth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference standings after advancing to the semifinals in 2023.
Prior to joining UTA, Van Hook spent five seasons with the University of Oklahoma as an assistant coach, concluding his tenure with an appearance in the 2022 College World Series final. He also assisted in recruiting efforts at OU.
“[Van Hook] led a resurgence in our baseball program that has restored our championship aspirations,” Athletics director Jon Fagg said in a statement. “He was diligent in rebuilding our program to contender status and made a significant impact during his time as a Maverick. We know the next move will again be impactful for [Van Hook] and his entire family, and we wish them all the best in this next chapter."
