Office of Transition Programs and Services commemorates new space with Valentine’s Day party

Valentine’s themed hearts and silver mylar balloons lined the Office of Transition Programs and Services on Wednesday, celebrating its grand opening since moving to University Center Lower Level Suite B100. Originally, the staff was split between the current suite and B170. Tasha Talton, director of the office, said now the team gets to be together, and they’ve worked diligently to make the space welcoming and professional. In a Valentine’s Day-inspired celebration, the office encouraged guests to mingle and listen to a playlist of love songs. Faculty and staff started the event with party poppers and a small ceremony commemorating the opening. The celebration offered refreshments like water and punch, and a white and milk chocolate fountain. Strawberries, marshmallows and Rice Krispies Treats dotted the table, waiting to be dipped and enjoyed. Sarah Sexton, assistant director for transition programs, said the event represents a new start for the office and herself. Having been at UTA for just over a week, she said her previous institution didn’t have as many resources. “Being here, seeing the community, hearing from different community members and stakeholders within the university and their passion to continue advancing the student experience and making sure that they’re making the most of their time here at UTA is very inspiring,” Sexton said. She said she’s looking forward to the upcoming semester and finding ways to reimagine and reevaluate their services, ensuring the best opportunities for students and families as they learn how they “identify as a Maverick.” The Office of Transition Programs and Services aims to help students and their families have a positive, meaningful experience as they learn the “Maverick Way”, Talton said. This is achieved through various collaborative programs and events both inside and outside of UTA. “We specifically work on behalf of our former transfer students, first-generation college students, and parents and family members of undergraduate students,” she said. The Office of Transition Programs is student-facing and focuses on first-generation initiatives, promoting social and educational connections, Talton said. Events for this include the UTA First-Gen College Education Series and the First-Generation Brunch & Alumni Mixer. Transfer Students Services collaborates with admissions and financial aid to host events like Maverick FRIENDzy and FAFSA & TASFA Night. They have a transfer newsletter as well, she said. “We just hope to gain more traction from our targeted populations from this point forward,” Talton said. “We are maximizing the space that we have and excited to show it to everyone.” @hjgarcia0 news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
