Student Government elects next Speaker of the Senate, passes four resolutions

At Tuesday evening’s Student Senate meeting, members gathered in the Student Government Chambers to appoint a new Speaker of the Senate, vote on resolutions and deliberate plans for the fall semester. Student Government Parliamentarian Gaven Lopez was elected as the new Speaker of the Senate with 22 votes in favor, one opposed and one abstention. Succeeding Angel Hernandez, Lopez said that one of his main goals for the upcoming semester is resolution building, using inspiration from past ones. The body voted on four resolutions during the meeting; Resolution 24-01, “Enroll with Ease,” Resolution 24-07, “Locked Out, Give a Shout!,” Resolution 24-10, “NPHC Plots” and Resolution 24-11, “Opportunities in Orientation.” Students involved in the Honors College and some organizations are granted early registration for upcoming semesters. Unanimously passed, Resolution 24-01 points out that many courses are not available until regular registration deadlines, ultimately defeating the purpose of priority. The resolution asks all instructor assignments and course sections, not including ones taught by Ph.D students or professors hired after the deadline, to be finalized by the priority enrollment. Resolution 24-07 discusses providing resources to students experiencing locksmith difficulties with their vehicles. Since the UTA Police Department currently does not offer aid, outside services need to be contacted. The resolution, passed unanimously by the body, suggests UTAPD partner with a local locksmith service to assist students in a free, timely manner. At a Feb. 27 Student Senate meeting, Dremaine Sands, National Pan-Hellenic Council president, introduced Resolution 24-10, which aims to dedicate areas on campus to the nine recognized Greek Life groups within the council, according to previous Shorthorn reporting. After the Student Affairs Committee’s conducted research found local schools had dedicated monuments, as well as a couple already on campus, the body went forward with voting. Passed unanimously, the resolution asks UTA to erect and maintain plots for NPHC Greek Life. Resolution 24-11 addresses ways to make New Maverick Orientation more accessible for students with language barriers or sensory-sensitivity issues. Passed with one opposing vote, this suggests multi-language sessions, translated materials and information, as well as curating a low-sensory session with reduced sounds, dimmer visuals and opportunities to decompress without consequence. Four resolutions were tabled to be picked up in the fall semester for more research. These include Resolution 24-05, “Code Clinic,” Resolution 24-06, “Seizing Second Chances,” Resolution 24-08, “Modernizing Campus Life” and Resolution 24-09, “Mavs Movin’ Fast.” @hjgarcia0 news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
