UTA associate professor of biology dies, campus reflects

On Thursday, a Reddit user posted a professor’s Canvas message to their class stating that Michael Roner, associate professor of biology, died. Jeff Carlton, executive director of communications and media relations, confirmed in an email that Roner died Wednesday. Currently, there is no information regarding a memorial service. Roner began at UTA as an assistant professor of biology in 2002 and was promoted to a tenured associate professor in 2009, Carlton said. Roner was teaching five classes this semester. His studies focused on antimicrobial properties of saponins, which are naturally occurring plant compounds that affect bacterial membranes and inhibit their growth, Carlton said. Clay Clark, professor and chair in the Department of Biology, will discuss plans going forward with other professors for Roner’s students. During his tenure, Roner received multiple awards for his research, including the UTA Professional Development Award, the UTA Research Enhancement Award and the Provost’s Research Excellence Award. “We tried for many years to nominate [Roner] for the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, but he always felt that others were more deserving,” Clark said in a statement. “[Roner] was a humble and valued colleague and friend to many staff, faculty and students at UTA.” Other Reddit users expressed their condolences, remembering fond times with Roner. Some wished they’d taken more of his courses. Others were in “disbelief.” “He was always among the first to volunteer for program development in biology, and he was instrumental in helping us move our MS-nonthesis degree to an online program,” Clark said. “We will greatly miss his smile, and his laugh would lighten the mood for everyone.” @hjgarcia0 news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu
