The Student Access and Resource Center is focused on providing equal access for students in need of accommodations. The services aim to enable students to succeed academically and have their needs met on campus.
The center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays in University Hall Room 102. Services are free.
In an email, SAR accessibility specialist Adam Johnson said, “The SAR Center assists students with academic accommodations and assists faculty and staff in implementing them.”
The center offers multiple resources for students to use throughout the year. There are services for students who are blind or vision impaired, as well as those who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Housing accommodations are offered, and the verification of service and emotional support animals are provided.
“The Learning Access Center is a resource for individuals with qualifying diagnoses; learning disorders, ADHD, and autism,” said Johnson. “Qualifying students also have the opportunity to take exams in the Alternative Testing Center. The SAR Center also provides training for students, faculty and staff.”
Johnson said applications can be made at any time and their services are free of charge if registered with the SAR office. To access these resources, students must fill out the online application and attend an intake interview. Accommodations must be requested online every semester.
“Disability resources let people know that they have an equal opportunity and many of these resources are not common knowledge,” Johnson said.
Students, teachers and faculty are trained by the center to answer any questions and offer guidance to Mavericks.
“Asking for help is not easy, but it gets easier and makes a difference,” said Johnson.
